How to apply
Applications go through your local Public Housing Agency (PHA), not HUD directly — and the process, required documents, and wait times vary by agency. Here's the general shape of it.
Before you apply
- Find the PHA that covers your address — see the Housing Authority Finder.
- Gather ID, proof of income, and household composition documents (birth certificates, custody orders, proof of disability/elderly status if applicable) for everyone who will live in the unit.
- Check whether the waiting list is currently open — many are closed for long stretches, and reopenings are often announced with little notice.
Common reasons applications stall
Mismatched household information (someone listed on one document but not another), missing proof of immigration/citizenship status for any household member, and unreported income are the most frequent causes of delay or denial. Double-check that every adult and child who will actually live in the unit is listed consistently across every form.
